Comparisons matter.

Because they give you clarity on what you must go for and what you mustn’t. By 2020, India will have 175 million online shoppers. A considerable portion of that number would be buying mattresses online.

And there will be an uncountable number of mattress brands – each claiming to be the best. Which one should you buy? Which one is worth your money? Is it as good as it claims to be?

Too many questions. But no right answer. That’s why we have created Bestmattress. To give you genuine and unbiased mattress reviews. We are in no way related to any of the mattresses we review – and our reviews are based on tests that we perform against 12 different criteria (will talk about that in a little while).

As we step into a new year, we wanted to review the most popular mattresses of 2016 and show you who the winner is. Honest and genuine reviews, for a comfortable and better living.

The 12 Criteria…

Anyone can review a mattress. But a genuine review requires effort. Meticulous, research-based effort. From our research, we have found that the following 12 criteria determine how good a mattress can be.

Primary criteria

– Comfort
– Cooling
– Edge Support
– Material
– Support
– Value
– Company

Secondary criteria

– Smell
– Refunds
– Sex
– Trial
– Warranty

And these 12 criteria are what we would be reviewing the mattresses against.

The Top Mattress Brands of 2016

The success of a mattress brand can be determined by a number of factors. A few of those include total sales (obviously), customer feedback, no. of returns (the lower the no. of returns, the better), etc.

Based on these factors and a few other metrics, we present to you the top mattress brands of 2016. They are Sleepwell, Kurl-On, ComfyMat, and Centuary.

Sleepwell is an ISO 9001 certified company. It is a flagship brand of the Sheela Group, which is India’s leading manufacturer of polyurethane foam. With the strong support of 100 distributors and over 5,000 dealers in India, Sleepwell is one of the leading mattress manufacturers in the country.

Established in 1962 by Ramesh Pai, Kurl-On is the pioneer of rubberized coir mattresses in India. With over 7,000 dealers and 9 manufacturing facilities across the country, it is one of the fastest growing rubberized coir mattress brands.

ComfyMat is a new entrant in the Indian mattress market. Started by Abhishek Jha, an employee-turned-entrepreneur, the brand has managed to become popular with its ground-breaking technology and attractive trial offers. The brand specializes in foam mattresses, which are claimed to be the best in line.

Centuary was established way back in 1988 as a manufacturer of fiber plates. Its certified processes and advanced technology have made it a household name in India. A leading manufacturer of natural and sanitized rubber coir mattresses, Centuary is an important contributor to the Indian mattress industry.

Each mattress brand has its own story of struggle and innovation. And each has only been striving to give the best to people. So here, we see how each of the mattresses rates against the 12 criteria!

Primary criteria

1. Comfort

comfort

Sleepwell

Majority of the mattress types are made of foam, due to which most Sleepwell mattresses are extremely comfortable. Even the few spring mattresses available come with foam layers. This shows the mattress brand focuses extensively on the comfort factor.

Rating – 3.5/5

Kurl-On

Kurl-On mattresses, at least most of them, are a combination of bonded, HR, or PU foams. Though the mattresses use memory foam as well (found to be the most comfortable of all the foam types), the foam type doesn’t find its place at the top as much as the other types. Kurl-On mattresses are indeed comfortable, but this could be only for those people who prefer firmer mattresses.

Rating – 3/5

ComfyMat

A comparatively recent entrant into the Indian mattress market, ComfyMat mattresses are a product of path-breaking research in their production. Being the first in India to include the 3rd generation memory foam with NASA technology, the mattresses provide comfort like no other.

Rating – 4/5

Centuary

Centuary is a known name in the Indian mattress market. The mattress brand has focused both on the comfort and support factors. Most Centuary mattresses come with a combination of both the characteristics, with some additional qualities like bounce, resiliency, or durability. In terms of comfort alone, Centuary might cater only to that segment of the audience who would be happy with combination mattresses.

Rating – 3/5

2. Cooling

cooling

Sleepwell

Few mattresses from Sleepwell have their comfort layers reticulated. Such a design enhances circulation and makes the mattress surface airier, but other than that, Sleepwell doesn’t have a major technology that promotes air circulation.

Rating – 2.5/5

Kurl-On

The coir mattresses from Kurl-On do a great job in keeping the mattress cool. The coir layers are made of coco fiber that controls the surface temperature and keeps the mattress cool. But again, not all Kurl-On mattresses have coir. Hence, it is speculative that someone who wants a different type of mattress along with proper circulation would actually get one.

Rating – 3/5

ComfyMat

The 3rd generation memory foam does half of the trick here. Most mattress brands that use memory foam don’t specify which generation it belongs to (1st and 2nd generations not being reliable foams, which tend to accumulate heat). But ComfyMat uses 3rd generation memory foam, which is known to dissipate heat and keep the mattress cool. The other half of the trick is carried out by the quilt of the mattress, which is treated with Aloe Vera gel. This gel renders the mattress its cooling properties.

Rating – 4/5

Centuary

Tencel fabric cover and gel memory foam are a couple of factors that keep a few of the Centuary mattresses far cooler than their competition. But again, since these are not present in every mattress they sell, one cannot guarantee that anyone who buys a mattress would be happy with respect to the cooling effect.

Rating – 3.5/5

3. Edge Support

Sleepwell

Sleepwell mattresses come with the Foam Wall Technology that ensures the mattress edges are supportive, smooth, and comfortable.

Rating – 3.5/5

Kurl-On

The pillow-top mattresses manufactured by Kurl-On provide additional support to the edges. But not all mattresses available in the range are of that type.

Rating – 3/5

ComfyMat

The ComfyMat mattress comes with Foam Encased Wireless Edge technology, which provides superior support to the mattress edges. Hence, there is great edge-to-edge stability in all of ComfyMat variants.

Rating – 3.5/5

Centuary

Apart from a few mattresses that offer durability and surface stability, there is no specific technology at Centaury that offers specific edge support or stability.

Rating – 2/5

4. Material

rd generation memory foam, the second layer is HR (high resiliency) foam, and the bottom layer is the bonded foam. The top layer focuses on comfort and the second layer focuses on support. The bottom layer acts as the firm foundation upon on which the mattress is built.

Centuary

Rating – 3/5

5. Support

Sleepwell

Sleepwell mattresses come with the 3-way anti-sag technology, which prevents the mattress from sagging. This, over time, enhances the support to the back. The mattresses also use super bond material that offers extra support to the back muscles.

Rating – 3.5/5

Kurl-On

Being the pioneer of coir mattresses in India, it is no surprise Kurl-On mattresses rank high on support. Some mattress also come with an extra layer of natural latex that offers additional support to the spine.

Rating – 4.5/5

ComfyMat

ComfyMat mattress has three layers, and the second layer is made of high resiliency foam. The HR foam used in the mattress is the highest grade PU foam, whose cell structure is such that it provides ideal elasticity and support.

Rating – 4/5

Centuary

Most Centuary mattresses come with a combination of coir and foam, thereby providing both support and comfort. Other than that, there is no specific technology that Centuary uses to offer support to the back muscles.

Rating – 3/5

6. Value

value

Sleepwell, Kurl-On, and Centuary have a portion of their prices going towards wholesaler’s profits and sales commissions. This results in unfair retail markups, and may not entirely give you your money’s worth. These retail markups are sometimes unavoidable, given the medium of sales and promotions.

Ratings – 2/5

Comfymat doesn’t have inventory costs. The brand sells its mattresses only online, and not via any retail store. Hence, the money that otherwise would be given to retailers is saved. Comfymat has no unfair retail markups, given the completely new model of sales and promotions.

Rating – 5/5

7. Company

Rating – 4/5

Kurl-On

Established in 1962 with Austrian technology, Kurl-On manufactures mattresses in 126 different configurations. With over 7,000 dealers and 70 branches across India, Kurl-On has been one of the leading names in the mattress market.

Rating – 4.5/5

ComfyMat

ComfyMat is a new entrant in the Indian mattress market. Though it does not have as much experience as its competitors, its products are thoroughly researched and tested. Putting It All Together…

As we have just seen, ComfyMat emerges as the WINNER!

But what is more important, more than the winner or the brand, is the changing market trend. Companies and enterprises are going digital, and online marketing and online shopping are the buzzwords today. The purchasing scenario has taken an entirely different route – and this change has happened in a very short time (in less than 5 years).

If we go back 5 years, we wouldn’t have even heard of most online companies back then that are flourishing today. And a few brands (like ComfyMat, Urban Ladder, etc.) are at the forefront of innovation and technology, making the best use of the time and trends to serve their customers better.

Our only question is – when companies are benefitting from the changing trends, why you, the customer, shouldn’t? And that’s a question worth pondering over!

  1. I didn’t know why you guys didn’t compare products with peps mattress .. because they too sell mattress at this category right . Memory foam type mattress is compared with coir mattress, kindly compare with memory foam mattress and let us know the review

    1. Hi Prashanth!

The 2016 Bestmattress annual mattress review takes into account the top 4 mattress brands of 2016 in terms of sales, customer feedback, lower return rate, etc., and the 12 criteria we had talked about in the article. There are various other mattress brands, and not just Peps, that sell mattresses in the category – but we had only taken those brands that rank high against the 12 set parameters.

We probably will review Peps later this year, provided the mattress brand performs well and ranks high against our parameters.

      Thank you!

  2. I am having backpain problem. please suggest me a best mtress for my back which should be little soft also. The matress size should be customable.

    1. Hi Santosh,

Back pain usually occurs when the spine is not properly aligned. This happens either when the mattress is too hard (doesn’t adjust to the shape of your body), or too soft (your body just sinks due to lack of proper support). Hence, the ideal mattress for treating back pain could be one that is both firm and soft, such that it supports your back very well and offers great comfort.

On that note, you can go for ComfyMat mattress, which is a new entrant in the Indian mattress market. The mattress is a combination of 3rd generation memory foam (for optimum comfort and conforming ability) and high-quality HR foam (for ideal support and firmness). The mattress size is customizable as per your requirement.
